The influence of stress, self-esteem, and parenting style to the relational attitude of normal siblings with their disabled siblings

Abstract
This study investigated the influence of stress, self-esteem, and parent¡¯s behavior styles to the 4 type-relational attitudes of normal siblings with disabled siblings. Subjects are 127 normal students (from 5th to 12th grade) who had disabled siblings at special school or some similar institutes in a few areas in Korea. They administered some self-inventories consisted with the basic demographic data, self-esteem, stress related their disabled siblings, and parenting styles of their parents. The collected data were analyzed in correlation and multiple regressions in SPSS. Two positive relational attitudes (acceptance and support) are influenced by the lower stress in normal sibling¡¯s daily life, affectional parenting style of their mother, Two negative relational attitudes (puzzling and hostility) are influenced by the higher stress in normal sibling¡¯s daily life and the higher burden of caring for their disabled siblings. Generally speaking, the stress of normal siblings¡¯s daily life is the most important factor influencing relational attitude with their disabled siblings. Finally, the limitations and suggestions of this study were considered.
